Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a saturated mono- or dibasic acid, economically, by the oxidative cleavage of the double bond of an unsaturated fatty acid, using ruthenium dioxide as a catalyst and cholorine as an oxidation agent, under specific strongly alkaline conditions controlling variation of the alkalinity within a specific range, thereby suppressing the side reactions.
CONSTITUTION: A saturated mono- or dibasic acid is prepared by the oxidative cleavage of the carbon-carbon double bond of a 3W22C unsaturated fatty acid (mono or dibasic acid) with chlorine, pref. 20W40°C, using ruthenium dioxide as a catalyst, keeping the pH of the reaction liquid to a strongly alkaline state (pH ≥12.0) while controlling the variation of the pH within 0.5. By this prodedure, foaming of the relatively concentrated said reaction system can be prevented, the formation of high-molecular by-products is suppressed, and the abjective product containing only a small amount of side reaction products can be obtained in high yield. The amount of the catalyst is pref. esp. 0.005W0.05mol per 1mol of the unsaturated fatty acid, and that of chlorine is pref. 4W6mol per one double bond of the unsaturated fatty acid.
