Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled coagulant having remarkably improved solubility in water, by purifying a crude acrylamide to such a state as not to substantially contain N-acryloylamide, and polymerizing the resultant acrylamide.
CONSTITUTION: A crude aqueous solution of acrylamide obtained by the catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile with an optional amount of water preferably at 80W140°C under ordinary or higher pressure in the pH range of 4W10 is purified by the physical adsorption method, e.g. with active carbon, to give the N-acryloylamide content of 10ppm or less, preferably 1ppm or less. The resultant purified aqueous solution of the acrylamide is then preferably copolymerized with a cationic monomer copolymerizable with the acrylamide, e.g. diethylaminoethyl acrylate, in the presence of a polymerization initiator, e.g. an organic peroxide.
