Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polyacrylamide useful as a flocculant, etc. and having improved solubility in water and suppressed crosslinking, by polymerizing an aqueous solution of acrylamide-containing water-soluble vinyl monomers having limited concentration in the presence of a reducing inorganic sulfur compound, using an azo compound as a polymerization initiator.
CONSTITUTION: A polyacrylamide is prepared by polymerizing (A) a 45W90wt% aqueous solution of water-soluble vinyl monomers containing ≥50mol% of acrylamide at 10W120°C in the presence of (B) a reducing inorganic sulfur compound (e.g. sodium sulfite, etc.) and (C) an azo compound (e.g. 2,2'-azobis-2-amidinopropane dihydrochloride salt, etc.) as a polymerization initiator.
EFFECT: The combination of the component (A) with the component (B) suppresses the gelation of a highly concentrated aqueous solution of the monomers, and gives a water-soluble polymer economically, in an industrial scale.
