Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the angle of rotation on a polarized surface and enhance the S/N, by providing a beam splitter having different reflectance and transmissivity between the P and S polarized beams on an optical path between a linear polarized light source and a magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The P polarized beam emitted from a linear polarized light source 1 is condensed on a magnetooptic recording medium 4 by a condenser lens 3 and via a beam splitter 2. The splitter 2 has the 83% transmissivity and 17% reflectance for the P polarized beam plus the 17% transmissivity and 83% reflectance for the S polarized beam, respectively. The reflected light given from an MnBi recording medium of 1.5 deg.Kerr angle of rotation is turned into an angle of rotation of about 6 deg. via the splitter 2, separated to the normal and abnormal beams through a wallastone prism 5 and receives the differential detection via light receivers 6 and 6' plus a differential amplifier 7. As a result, the angle of rotation is increased on the polarizing surface to enhance the S/N.
