Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily read a recording pattern, and to use in common an optical system of a recording system and a reproducing system, by using a beam splitter having polarization dependability in the reproducing system. CONSTITUTION:A polarization plate 26 is subjected to rotation of the polarized surface against an optical element 23 whose transmitting reflection factor has polarization dependability, in accordance with the magnetizing direction of an area illuminated by a luminous flux (b), due to a Kerr effect, in case when the luminous flux (b) which has passed through the optical element 23 is reflected by a vertical magnetic recording body 24, in a P polarized incident state that the polarizing direction of the luminous flux is parallel with the paper surface. A luminous flux C modulated by the recording body 24 is reflected by the optical element 23, and after that, the polarized state of this luminous flux is varied from a state of the luminous flux C by the reflection factor of the optical element 23. A luminous flux (d) passes through an analyzer 25, and information recorded by a variation of bright and dark patterns is reproduced.
