Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a cathode for electrolysis with reduced hydrogen overvoltage, enhanced durability and corrosion resistance by plating a substrate with an Ni alloy using soln. contg. Ni salt, salt of a sacrificial metal, a sulfur compound and ammonium ion and selectively removing the sacrificial metal.
CONSTITUTION: A plating soln. is prepared by adding a soluble S-contg. compound such as thiocyanate and an aqueous soln. contg. ammonium ion such as NH4Cl to a plating soln. contg. Ni salt and ≥1 kind of salt of sacrificial metal such as Zn capable to make a eutectoid with Ni and showing baser potential than Ni. Using the prepared soln. the surface of a substrate of iron or the like is plated with an Ni alloy, and at least part of the sacrificial metal in the plated film is selectively removed by dipping in an aqueous soln. of acid or alkali or other method. Thus, a cathode with very low hydrogen overvoltage for electrolyzing water or alkali chloride is obtd. The substrate of the cathode has superior adhesion to the plated film.
