According to the state of focusing of a light beam on the disk surface, the state of the light incident to the line sensor 9 varies and a light circle 20 also varies, so that the output (l) of the line sensor 9 varies. On the basis of the variations, a focus error signal for automatic focusing is generated. In the figure, a 23 is a level for the addressing of a light shielding body 17, and a 22 is a level generated by bias light.
