Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent fog on nonimage areas and a fringe phenomenon, by detecting surface potential on a prescribed position of a charge retaining member prior to development of an electrostatic latent image, and controlling bias voltage to be applied to a developing means. CONSTITUTION:An electrometer 24 for detecting surface potential of nonimage areas on a photoreceptor 11a is arranged between a developing device 13 and the point on which a light reflected from an original M is projected on the receptor 11a near this. A surface potential detection signal obtained with the electrometer 24 is sent through a switch 25 to a memory circuit 26, stored for one cycle, amplified, and applied to the magnetic sleeve 13a of the device 13 as a bias voltage, thus permitting surface potential of the nonimage areas to rise gradually as a copying cycle proceeds, therefore, the bias voltage to be increased gradually in accordance with the surface potential of the nonimage areas.
