PURPOSE:To detect the remaining amount of the toner in a toner replenishing device from the amount of the toner stuck on a concn. detecting target by providing said target in the nonimage part of a photoreceptor. CONSTITUTION:When a reference display 6 provided near an original 4 and a platen 3 is exposed, a latent image and a concn. detecting target 7 are formed on the surface of a photoreceptor 2. When the target 7 arrives at a detector 9 after said latent image and target 7 are developed under the same conditions, the toner concn. of the target 7 is optically detected. A control circuit 10 compares the detected value thereof with a preset reference value, and detects the remaining amount of the toner in a toner replenishing device 8a. In this way, the remaining amount of the toner in the toner replenishing device is detected from the concn. of the concn. reference target 7 formed in the nonimage part of the photoreceptor.
