PURPOSE:To improve focus detection accuracy by providing a self-scanning type photoelectric conversion part, a contrast detecting circuit and a focus effective area decision circuit, and deciding in-focus when two ontrast signal levels go larger than an effective area limit level simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:The signals of a self-scanning type photoelectric conversion part U1 which has plural pieces of photoelectric element arrays, and a scanning circuit, and outputs the time-serial photoelectric conversion signals corresponding to the illuminance distribution of an object image and photoelectrically converted with a video circuit U2 and are extracted with a contrast detecting circuit U3. Thence, a focus indication signal is obtained by a focus decision circuit U4 and a focus display element 6 is flickered by a display driving circuit U5; at the same time, a driver U6 controlling the rate of extension of a lens system 2 is driven. Therefore, the focus detection accuracy is made higher, and the range of object luminances is widened. This device is effectively adaptable to each lens of a single lens reflex camera when its lens is interchanged.
