Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a steering shaft with small outer diameter and reliable operation by arranging axially a bumper mechanism for reducing vibration and a contraction mechanism for absorbing shock while using a torsion bar for the bumper mechanism.
CONSTITUTION: The rear half of an intermediate shaft 2 connected integrally with a front shaft 1 by shear pins 4 and the front half of a rear shaft 3 are formed into hollow shafts 2b, 3a respectively. The hollow shaft 3a fits rotatably in the hollow shaft 2b, and a torsion bar 6 is received in a cylindrical chamber 5 defined between both shafts while the front and rear ends of the bar 6 are fixed 7, 8 respectively to the intermediate shaft 2 and rear shaft 3. The intermediate shaft 2 is formed on the rear end with regulating grooves 12 and the rear shaft 3 is formed on the outer peripheral surface with transmitting projection 13. A play 14 is provided between these grooves to allow both shafts 2, 3 to be relatively rotated by a certain angle.
