Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a steering shaft with a buffer property to reduce an impact which the operator receives at collision, by dividing the steering shaft into a front and a rear portions, fitting them slidably in the axial direction and providing a breakable member in a gap at the fitted portions.
CONSTITUTION: The front part of a rear steering shaft 4 has an elliptic cross section and a flat surface 4a and is provided with a longitudinal groove 7 extending in the axial direction and with a cross groove 8 extending perpendicularly to the former groove 7. The rear part of a front steering shaft 3 is made of a hollow pipe whose cross section is elliptically shaped like that of the front part of the rear steering shaft 4. The rear part of the front steering shaft 3 is slidably fitted on the rear steering shaft 4. The flat section of the rear part of the front steering shaft 3 is provided with a hole 10 which communicates with the longitudinal groove 7. A cavity is defined at the fitted parts of both the steering shafts 3, 4 by the cross groove 8, the longitudinal groove 7 and the hole 10 which are connected to each other. Synthetic resin is injected and molded in the cavity to manufacture a beakable member 11 and conjoin it to both shafts 3, 4. When a compressive force acts to the steering shaft 3, 4 because of an impact, the breakable member 11 receives a tensile force. When the tensile force exceeds a prescribed level, the member 11 is broken to reduce the force of the impact, as much as possible, in cooperation with the sliding resistance of the shafts 3, 4.
