Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an acetal useful as an organic solvent, synthetic perfume, etc. in high selectivity, by reacting a vinyl ester with an alcohol in the presence of palladium chloride supported on active carbon as a catalyst without causing the problem of waste water treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl ester, e.g. vinyl acetate, is reacted with an alcohol, e.g. ethanol, in the presence of palladium chloride supported on active carbon at about 70°C, if necessary in an inert solvent, to give an acetal, e.g. acetaldehyde diethyl acetal. The catalyst is prepared by dissolving the palladium chloride in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid, immersing active carbon in the resultant solution, adsorbing the desired amount of the palladium chloride on the active carbon, and drying the active carbon adsorbing the palladium chloride.
EFFECT: The dissolution of the expensive palladium chloride in the reaction solution is prevented, and the high catalytic activity can be kept even after use for a long time.
USE: A synthetic intermediate for organic substances, e.g. vinyl ether.
