Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, by the condensation of optically active 4- hydroxymandelic acid with benzyl halides, then with 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, reduction of the carbonyl group to a methylene group, followed by catalylic reduction of the alcohol thus formed.
CONSTITUTION: L-4-Hydroxymandelic acid is condensed with benzyl halides to form L-4-benzyloxymandelic acid, which is then condensed with 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine to give L-N-(3,4-dimethoxyphenethyl)-4-benxylozymandelic acid amide. The carbonyl group of the amide is reduced to a methylene group, then catalytically reduced to form L-α-(3,4-dimethoxyphenethylaminomethyl)-4- hydroxybenzyl alcohol.
EFFECT: Smooth reaction provides the desired products in high yields.
USE: Pharmaceuticals having powerful and durable cardiotonic actions.
