Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a carbonaceous material having improved surface uniformity and processability, by carbonizing an organic material which is foamed and molded into an open-cell structure under heating.
CONSTITUTION: An organic material 1, e.g. an acrylic resin, is foamed to produce open cells 2. The resultant cells 2 are present in the whole thickness of the material 1. The material 1 is then made into a light-weight, spongelike form and the impregnation of the material 1 with a plastic in making a composite material is improved. The foamed material 1 is then molded into a desired shape in the molding step. The molding may be carried out simultaneously with the prefoaming step. The material 1 is then heated in air at about 200°C in the heating step and then heated in an inert gas, e.g. N2 or Ar, at about 1,000°C. In the process, the material 1 is carbonized in the state of open cells 2, and the carbonaceous material (1a) is then calcined. The resultant material (1a) is directly usable as an electrode for an electrostatic dust precipitator, etc., however, impregnated with a plastic 3 and used as a vibrating material in a speaker, etc.
