Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain cellular activated carbon having superior adsorbing power, superior wear resistance and a three-dimensional network cell structure by sticking powdered activated carbon and powdered thermosetting resin to continuous cell type synthetic resin foam having a three-dimensional network skeleton free from cell membranes and removing the resins by thermal decomposition.
CONSTITUTION: Honeycomb activated carbon 3 is produced by a known method, and after drying carbon 3 a liq. mixture of polyol and polyisocyanate as starting materials for polyurethane foam is poured into the openings to form soft urethane foam in the honeycomb cells. The cell membranes of the foam are then removed with a blast from an explosion to form continuous cell type synthetic resin foam having a three-dimensional network skeleton free from cell membranes. This foam is dipped in a liq. dispersion of powdered activated carbon and powdered thermosetting resin to stick them, and the resulting foam is dried and burned in a nitrogen atmosphere to remove the foam and resin. Thus, cellular activated carbon 1 is obtd.
