Abstract
PURPOSE: To maintain cooling rates, drawing speeds, etc. at optimum values by accurately measuring the thickness of a continuously cast ingot continuously or intermittently, and identifying the leading end position of a crater from the results of these measurement.
CONSTITUTION: The command of a control panel 11 forces the measuring rods 8, 8' of detectors 7, 7' for detecting the thickness of an ingot to descend from points A, A'. The rates of descending are subtracted by a signal processor 9. When the rods 8, 8' touch the ingot, the sliding detectors in the driving device for the rods 8, 8' in the detectors 7, 7' operate, and the subtraction of the device 9 is stopped by the signals thereof. The change rates of that point, that is, the thickness of the ingot is stored, and the result of the storage is displayed in a display device 11; at the same time, it is transmitted to a computer 12. The linear correlation relations between the change rates in ingot thickness by each width level of the ingot and the distances from meniscus up to crater leading ends are beforehand stored in the computer 12. Hence, the computer 12 estimates the current crater leading end from the device 9 and operation conditions and displays the same in a display device 13.
