Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent oxidation of charged molten steel through isolating it from the atmosphere so as to obtain sound steel ingot by supplying a molten metal surface coating agent into the mold in the process of bottom charge casting and at the same time by providing a cover between the charge port of a ladle and the charge pipe.
CONSTITUTION: The molten metal in a ladle 1 is charged into a mold 8 from the bottom through a charge pipe 6 set on a molding board 10 and a runner 7. In this case, a molten metal surface coating agent 9 is supplied in advance in the mold 8. Moreover, an air interrupting cover 5 is installed between a charge port 3 and the charge pipe 6 and an inert gas is introduced within the cover. Therefore, castings are performed in the state that the bottom of the ladle, the charge pipe 6, and the runner 7 are isolated from the atmosphere by the molten metal surface coating agent, and the oxidation preventing effect is considerably enhanced with less using of the inert gas. Thus steel ingots having less nonmetallic inclusions are casted.
