Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce a change in the internal temp. distribution of a copper smelting converter and to prevent sticking to the opening of a tuyere by charging part or all of silicate ore or silica into the converter through the tuyere.
CONSTITUTION: Part or all of silicate ore or silica is blown into the blast pipe 3 of a tuyere 2 of a copper smelting furnace 1 from a pressurized hopper 4 through a blowing pipe 5. The remainder is fed from a charge inlet as usual in the form of lumps. By this method powdered silica or the like is charged from the tuyere 2 close to both edges of the converter 1, so a reaction in the converter can be made as uniform as possible. Accordingly, a change in the internal temp. distribution of the converter is reduced, the oxidation of FeO is not accelerated, and magnetite is hardly formed. Since sticking to the opening of the tuyere is prevented, the number of punchings can be reduced.
