PURPOSE:To contrive to enhance the yields of iron and Mn by a method wherein a refining gas consisting of a mixture of oxygen and an inert gas is blown downward through a top-blowing lance and, simultaneously, the lance is whirled during the refining process. CONSTITUTION:As the refining gas, a mixture of oxygen and an inert gas such as Ar and N2 is used. The mixed gas is blown downward through a single top-blowing lance and, simultaneously, the lance is whirled during the refining process. By this method, it is possible to increase the effective collision energy with which the top- blown gas impinges upon the molten pig, iron, stirring the slag and the molten steel more effectively. At the same time, the CO partial pressure in the atmosphere inside the furnace is lowered. Accordingly, the degree of oxidation of the slag can be blowed and the yields of iron and Mn can be enhanced, particularly in the case of melting a low carbon steel.
