Abstract
PURPOSE: A quaternary ammonium halide and sulfuric acid are made to react in an organic solvent and the reaction is effected as the evolving hydrogen halide is being removed out of the reaction system to produce the titled compound with very simple operations in high yield, which is used as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A quanternary ammonium halide of formula I (R1WR4 are 1W8C alkyl, benzyl; X is halogen) such as tetrabutylammonium bromide is made to react with sulfuric acid in an organic solvent such as 1,2-dichloroethane and the evolving hydrogen halide is removed out of the reaction system along with the vapor of the organic solvent or by blowing an inert gas such an nitrogen gas or air into the reaction system through the reflux condenser whereby the halogen ion is directly substituted with sulfuric ion to produce a quanternary ammonium acidic sulfate of formula II.
USE: Antifungal, herbicide, surfactant.
