Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound efficiently, in high yield, and continuously, by a process including isomerization of 3,4-diacetoxybutene-1 from a mixture comprising 1,4-diactoxybutene-2, 3, 4-diacetoxybutene-1, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture comprising 1,4-diacetoxybutene-2, 3, 4- diacetoxybutene-1(3,4-DABE for short) and acetic acid as main components is fed to the distillation column II, 3,4-DABE and acetic acid whose amounts are more than the equivalent composition are distilled away from the top of the column, and the distillated solution is sent to the isomerization reactor III which is packed with a cation exchange resin. The isomerization is carried out at ≥30°C to <80°C, and the isomerized solution is recycled through the distillation column to collect the desired high- purity compound continuously from the bottom of the column. When the reaction solution contains a large amount of acetic acid, the first and the second distillation columns are used as acetic acid is partially distilled away by the first distillation column, to carry out parferably the isomerization. A-DABE is useful as a raw material for preparing 1,4-butanediol, etc.
