Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound continuously and in high purity, from the bottom of a distillation column, by supplying a mixture of the titled compound with its isomer to the distillation column, distilling the isomer of content more than the equilibrium composition from the top of the column, then isomerizing the isomer in the presence of a catalyst, and recycling the resultant isomerized solution through the distillation.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture containing 1,4-diacetoxybutene-2 and its isomer, i.e. 3, 4-diacetoxybutene-1 as chief components, is supplied to a distillation column, and the above-mentioned isomer is distilled from the top of the tower to give the isomer of content more than the equilibrium one. The resultant distillate is fed into an isomerizing reactor in the presence of an isomerizing catalyst, especially a cation exchange resin, isomerized in the liquid phase, and the isomerized solution is recycled through the distillation column mentioned above, to give the aimed compound from the bottom of the tower efficiently and continuously in high purity with a relatively simple separating operation. The raw material mixture may contain further acetic acid, and in this case, most of the acetic acid is distilled off in the first distillation column and the treating process is carried out in the second distillation column.
