Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a serum chloesterol increase suppressing substance effective at a small does, by using hemicellulose obtained by the alkali extraction of corn fiber, as main component.
CONSTITUTION: Corn fiber, or residue obtained by removing starch, proteins, lipids, etc. from corn fiber, is extracted under alkaline conditions to obtain hemicellulose, which is used as a main component of the objective serum cholesterol increase suppressing subtance. Said subtance consits of ≥90% of hemicellulose and small amounts of lignin, cellulose, etc. and has comparable or superior effect to the dietary fiber obtained from corn fiber at a dose of ≤1/10 of the dietary fiber. Prior to the extraction, the corn fiber is pref. subjected to the enzymatic treatment, chemical treatment or physical treatment to remove the starch, proteins, etc. The alkali extraction is carried out e.g. by adding NaOH solution to the corn fiber, and agitating the mixture at room temperature for a night.
