PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a thyristor converter by providing a thyristor switch between DC terminals of the converter for generating unidirectional DC output, connecting it to the compensating field coil of an AC motor and controlling the polarity and the magnitude, thereby enhancing the utility rate of the converter. CONSTITUTION:A variable frequency AC power is supplied by a power converter 102 to the armature 101 of a period motor. A main field coil 103 generates an AC voltage at the armature 101 and supplies a current via a power converter 104. A power converter 206 is connected to a power transformer 208 to supply unidirectional polarity DC current, and a thyristor switch 209 connected to a compensating field coil 105 is connected. The magnitude of the DC current of the converter 206 can be controlled, and the switch 209 can switch the polarity of the current supplied to the coil 105 with a single phase bridge construction. In this manner, the utility rate of the power converter becomes 100%, and the size of the converter can be reduced.
