Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure moisture content in molding sand without influence of variation in the bulk density of the sand by filling an electrically insulated cylinder with molding sand and compressing the molding sand with two electrode sections and applying voltage between the electrodes and measuring the electric current through the sand. CONSTITUTION:An electrically insulating cylindrical body 4 is supported by a supporting section 3, and it is put on an electricity conductive plate 6 on a receiving base 7, and molding sand is supplied into the cylindrical body 4 from the hollow section 11 of an inverted cone-shaped trapezoid. A piston rod 16 that has a pressing member 18 made of an electricity conductivity material is lowered to compress the molding sand with suitable pressure between the plate 6 and the member 18, and a voltage is applied to the sand, using both the plate 6 and the member 18 as electrodes. The current through the sand is measured and from the resistance of the sand its moisture content is measured. When the compressive pressure is over 0.33kg/cm<2>, the moisture content in a large range can be measured with stable and high accuracy without the influence from the bulk density of the molding sand.
