Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a continuous optical fiber having high strength and excellent transmission characteristics, by covering an optical fiber with a sheath having high elastic modulus and low linear expansion coefficient and obtained by the dielectric heating and drawing of a plastic pipe.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber preform 2 attached to the preform feeder 1 is heated and softened in the drawing furnace 3, and spun to an optical fiber 4 having definite diameter. The optical fiber is inserted into a plastic pipe 8 molded by the extruder 5 and the cross head 6, and cooled in the cooling tank 7. The cooled pipe 8 is heated dielectrically 10 and drawn by the drawing rollers 9 having different speed to obtain an optical fiber 4 covered with a pipe having low expansion coefficient and high elastic modulus. The covered optical fiber 11 is annealed in an annealing furnace at a temperature slightly lower than the softening temperature of the plastic pipe, and wound with the winder 12. The pipe 8 is made of a thermoplastic resin such as PE, PP, etc.
