Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the strength and the heat resistance of a spacer and to increase the stability of an optical fiber cable, by producing a spacer having a groove by giving an extrusion molding to the thermoplastic resin and then storing the optical fiber core wire into the groove of the spacer after forming cross-linking. CONSTITUTION:An equal linear expansion coefficient is set for an tension- resistant matter at the center of a spacer 2 and an optical fiber core wire 4. The spacer 2 is produced through the extrusion molding of the thermoplastic resin and has a groove 3 to store the wire 4. A cross-lining reaction is applied to the spacer 2 with irradiation of electron beams, etc. to increase the mechanical strength and the heat stability. At the same time, the internal residual stress caused during the processing is frozen to eliminate a stress releasing phenomenon for a long period of time even under a severe variation of temperature. The wire 4 is stored into the groove 3, and an outer coat 5 of a lamination of metal and plastic with excellent water resistance is applied at the outer circumference of the spacer 2. Thus an optical fiber is obtained to be especially suited for the use under the severe change of temperature with no increase caused to the transmission loss.
