Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a needle-like goethite suitable to a raw material paticularly for magnetic materials having the uniform particle size distribution, by feeding an oxidizing gas intermittently to a suspension of a hydroxide obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of a ferrous salt with an aqueous solution of an alkali, and oxidizing the hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a ferrous salt, e.g. ferrous sulfate, is reacted with an aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. NaOH, at 20W80°C to prepare a suspension of a hydroxide, e.g. ferrous hydroxide. An oxidizing gas, e.g. O2 or air, is intermittently fed to the resultant suspension to give the aimed needle- like goethite. Preferably, the feeding time of the oxidizing gas is (1/4) or less the time of stopping the feed, and the oxidizing ratio in one cycle of feeding and stopping is 10% or less. The resultant needle-like goethite particles have the uniform particle size distribution, and are suitable to a raw material for magnetic materials, e.g. α-iron powder, magnetite or γ-Fe2O3, obtained by reducing or reducing and oxidizing the particles by the conventional method.
