Abstract

PURPOSE: To deposit cobalt hydroxide uniformly on the surface of goethite, by suspending to goethite in an aqueous soln. contg. cobalt ions, and by using ammonia for the neutralizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A reducing agent for reducing goethite, or needlelike ferric hydroxide, is utilized effectively. An alkali is added to an aqueous medium contg. cobalt ions and dispersed goethite particles so as to stick the cobalt hydroxide to the surface of goethite particles. For the alkali, ammonia gas or a mixture of ammonia gas and an inert gas is supplied to the aqueous medium to form bubbles thereby depositing cobalt hydroxide directly on the surface of the goethite uniformly. Nitrogen or air may be used as the inert gas. The neutralization takes place highly uniformly and its rate can be controlled by varying the quantity of gas.
