PURPOSE:To produce the high pressure sodium lamp having high power saving effect while compatible with the conventional 700W mercury lamp without lowering the brightness, by containing a resistor directly coupled to the light emission tube in the outer tube then limiting the resistance of said resistor thereby limitng the tube voltage of the light emission tube. CONSTITUTION:During the lighting of the lamp the light emission tube 12 is connected in series with the resistor 11 and a portion of the input power to the lamp is consumed by the resistor 11 to suppress the increase of the tube voltage VLL of the light emission tube 12. The relation between the resistance R of said resistor 11 and the tube voltage of the light emission tube VLL is made such that R<=-0.23VLL+43.2R<=-0.40VLL+61.2 while VLL<=140. Consequently such high pressure sodium lamp has the total flux same or higher than that of 700W fluorescent mercury lamp while exhibits the power saving effect more than 20% for the power consumption including 700W fluorescent mercury lamp and has the comparable service life characteristic.
