Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the titled resin having the lowest possible content of unreacted phenol and having a high average MW, by subjecting a dihydric phenol and an excess of HCHO to the primary condensation in the presence of a solvent under an acidic condition and then effecting the secondary MW-increasing reaction.
CONSTITUTION: To a dihydric phenol are added HCHO in an amount to provide a mol ratio, B/A, of 1.2W2.0, and a solvent (e.g., benzene). Then, the mixture is subjected to a condensation reaction at 90W100°C for 1W4hr under a weakly to strongly acidic condition to a level of unreacted phenol of below 1wt% while the water formed is being removed. Then, the product is subjected to a MW-increasing reaction at 160W240°C for 2W20hr under a condition including the lowest possible water content while the temperature is gradually raised with the increase of viscosity to obtain a novolak type phenol resin having a number- average MW (excluding unreacted phenol) ≥1,500 and a weight-average MW (excluding unreacted phenol)/number-average MW ratio of 3.0W5.0.
