Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a phenol resin which, when mixed with an oxidizable resin, produces a composition excellent in heat resistance and mechanical properties, by condensing a novolak type substituted phenol resin containing a bifunctional phenol component and an aldehyde with a bifunctional chain extender.
CONSTITUTION: A novolak type substituted phenol resin (A) whose molecular structure is linear and in which the phenol component is a mixture containing 70W 100mol% at least one bifunctional phenol component represented by the formula, wherein two of the three R' groups are H, the remaining one is a C1W8 alkyl and R is H etc., and 0W30mol% trifunctional phenol component is an aldehyde represented by the formula: R2-CHO, wherein R2 H or methyl, is condensed with a bifunctional chain extender (B) reactive with a phenol-ring hydrogen in the presence of an acidic catalyst until the number-average MW of the final novolak type substituted phenol resin reaches 1,500 or higher.
