Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress titled convection and to improve the upper speed boundary high speed welding by locating an electromagnet which has a coil of a cable connected from an earthing plate to an earth point always below the molten pool and generating electromagnetic force in a welding advance direction. CONSTITUTION:In high speed arc welding which progresses welding while generating arcs by flowing earth current from a welding electrode 12 to metallic base materials 11 to be welded, an earthing plate 13 is kept located always below the electrode 12. Therefore, the earth current flows always in the direction right under the molten pool A as shown by solid arrows, and flows through the electrode 12 the materials 11 the plate 13 a cable 17 an earth terminal, thereby generating the magnetic field penetrating therough the materials 11 and the pool A between both magnetic electrodes of an iron core 14. The electromagnetic force in the same direction as the welding advance direction is generated as shown by blanked arrows by said magnetic field, whereby the plasma flow is suppressed and the convection behind the molten metal is suppressed well. Therefore, in spite of an increase in the upper speed boundary of the high speed welding, the possibility of undercutting is eliminated.
