Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a conductive repellent having high repellency and low internal resistance and a gas diffusion electrode for a fuel cell by decreasing a ratio of a fluorine atom to one carbon atom less than one in a compound of fluorine and carbon. CONSTITUTION:Contact angles to water are measured to investigate the repellency of a partially fluorinated carbon. The results are shown in the figure. The repellency increases with the contact angles. The figure shows that if the X value is more than 0.01, the contact angle is larger than that of polytetrafluoroethylene and the repellency is also superior. The electric resistance is measured to investigate the electric conductivity of CFx. The results are shown in the figure. When the value of X is increased to one, CFx becomes an insulator, but when the value of X is less than one, it has electric conductivity. When the value of X is less than 0.2, the value of electric resistance becomes less than 1,000OMEGA-cm<-1>. Therefore, CFx having the value of 0.01<=X<=0.2 is preferable in the electric conductivity and the repellency.
