Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce hydrogen of high purity efficiently in electrolysis of water by diaphragm electrolysis by using a fluorine-contg. cation exchange resin membrane of which the exchange capacity with ion exchange groups is specific for a diaphragm. CONSTITUTION:The fluorine-contg. cation exchange resin membrane which has the hydroxyl group of the formula (X, X' are Cl, H, F or fluoroalkyl groups) as an ion exchange group and 0.1-4.0milli equiv./g dry resin exchange capacity is used as a diaphragm in electrolyzing water, whereby H2 is obtained. It is an essential requirement for this diaphragm that it permeates substantially no electrolyte and formed gases, for example, O2, and if it is permeable, the purity of the resultant H2 is low. Here, the fluoroalkyl groups are of C1-10 and particularly perfluoroalkyl groups, and above all, both X, X' are preferably F. If the exchange capacity is below the lower limit, the electric resistance of the membrane is high and this will lead to an increase in electrolytic voltage. Conversely, if it is in excess of the upper limit, moisture content of the membrane increases and current efficiency decreases.
