Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress knockings in an ignition device by furnishing a plug with two or more igniton gaps and by, upon supplying discharge current to No.1 ignition gap, supplying another discharge current to No.2 gap in response to a signal sensed by an ion probe. CONSTITUTION:An ignition plug 5 performs discharge at No.1 ignition gap 6A in response to one of the two ignition signals of an ignition control circuit 12, and the flame produced at this discharge is sensed by an ion probe 13 to send a signal to the ignition control circuit 12 through a flame sensing signal circuit 14. This signal actuate the discharge at No.2 ignition gap 6B. Accordingly, two cores of flame are formed apart from the center of cylinder to urge growth of the flame with each other, which assures that a strong swirl does not blow off the flame and the initial period in the combustion is shortened. Because No.2 flame is formed at the other gap 6B by the signal from ion probe 3, the mixture swirl can cause an equal share to the flame propagation zone.
