Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase both the affinity to electrolyte and the electrolyte-holding ability of a separator, which is made of a woven or non-woven fabric prepared from an olefin-system resin, while maintaining the increased life of the said separator. CONSTITUTION:A separator made of a woven or non-woven fabric prepared from polyethylene or polypropylene, although it has excellent electrolyte-resisting and acid-resisting property, has an extremely inferior affinity to electrolyte and has an inferior electrolyte-holding ability. Although the affinity to electrolyte of an olefin-system separator can be effectively improved by sulfonating the separator by use of fuming sulfuric acid or chlorosulfuric acid, adjustment of the concentration of fuming sulfuric acid is rather complicated. In this invention, the affinity to electrolyte and the electrolyte-holding ability of an olefin-system separator can be widely improved by using simple concentrate sulfuric acid instead of fuming sulfuric acid, and by making the treatment temperature high. Accordingly, since commercially available concentrate sulfuric acid itself can be used, an easily evaporating matter such as fuming sulfuric acid is not contained in the sulfonation solution, the above solution is remarkably stable, any adjustment of the concentration of the above solution becomes unnecessary, and there caused no problems in terms of circumstances. Here, the treatment temperature is perferred to be 100-120 deg.C, and immersion time in this condition should be in the range of 15-90 minutes.
