Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve specifically the idle operation characteristic of a Diesel engine by a method wherein the recirculation of the exhaust gas (EGR) of the Diesel engine is performed at a flow rate proportional to an engine load except when the engine is in idler or no load operation and the EGR is stopped when the engine is in idler or no load operation. CONSTITUTION:When the engine is in no load operation, a negative pressure control valve 37 gives to a port 43 a negative pressure corresponding to the angle of rotation of an accelerator link 56. When, at this time, a neural stage sensor 63 has not yet detected a neutral stage, a solenoid of a negative pressure changeover valve 59 is energized so that conduits 58 and 60 are made to communicate with each other and the negative pressure in the port 43 is introduced into an EGR cotrol valve 20. Consequently, a valve element 18 opens an inlet port 13 and a part of the exhaust gas is returned to an air intake passage 6. On the other hand, when the neutral stage sensor 63 has already detected the neutral stage, that is, when the engine is in idle operation, the negative pressure changeover valve 59 is deenergized and the conduit 60 is connected to an atmospheric pressure port 61 with the result that the EGR control valve 20 is closed and the return flow of the exhaust gas is stopped.
