Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal color display element that provides sufficient brightness and high contrast when driven by a low voltage by forming oriented films on a pair of substrate surfaces in contact with a liquid crystal material by multiple diagonal vapor deposition of SiO from mutually different directions. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of glass substrates 1, 7 coated with transparent electrodes 2, 6 are covered with the 1st shielding plate 11 having space parts 12 smaller than visual resolving power and SiO is vacuum deposited from roughly a 60 deg. deviated 15 from the direction of a normal 14 of the substrates. The surfaces of the substrates 1, 7 and covered with the 2nd shielding plate 13 having space parts 12 in the regions differing from those of the 1st plate 11, and SiO is vacuum deposited from roughly a 60 deg. deviated 16 from the normal 14 of the substrate normal 14. The film 3, 5 of SiO of which the groove directions differ alternately in rectangular strip shapes are formed on the surfaces of the substrates 1, 7 by the multiple diagonal vapor deposition of the varied vapor deposition directions, whereby the intended guest-host type liquid crystal color display element is obtained.
