Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture lead free cutting steel having superior properties of surface fatigue life, etc., while having superior ability being cut with a small amount of lead, by collecting more lead components at a billet surface layer part by electromagnetically stirring molten steel at the entrance of a mold in the horizontal direction.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel M in a foundary ladle 1 is injected into a tundish 3 through a nozzle 2, and charged into a mold 5 from the charging port 4 of the tundish 3 to obtain a cast piece 6 by a continuous casting device. While a wire 8 of lead or lead alloy is supplied into molten metal at the entrance of the mold 5 through a guide pipe 9, the molten metal is stirred vigrously and electromagnetically in the horizontal direction by an electromagnetic stirrer 7. This stirring by a revolving magnetic field collects more lead components to the surface layer part of a billet 6 by centrifugal force to obtain a billet 6 which has the more content of the lead components at the surface layer part than at the center part, thus obtaining lead free cutting steel which contains less lead, has superior properties, and causes no pollution.
