Abstract

PURPOSE:To cast lead free cutting steel which has no variances in the content of lead and in which lead particles are distributed uniformly continuously by adding lead (alloy) directly to the molten steel charged into a mold under electromagnetic agitation. CONSTITUTION:Molten steel M is charged through a nozzle 2 into a tundish 3 and is thence charged through an charging port 4 into a mold 5, whereby it is cast continuously. At this time, an electromagnetic agitator 7 is installed in the upper part of the mold 5, and the molten metal charged into the mold 5 and the molten steel in the secondary cooling zone are electromagnetically agitated. A wire rod 8 of lead (alloy) or the like is added directly into this molten metal through a guide pipe 9. According to this method, the lead is melted under electromagnetic agitation in the relatively narrow upper part in the mold 5 and therefore it is melted uniformly into the molten steel.
