Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an additive for boron-treating steel which has improved quenching characteristics by mixing a specific amount of powdery boron alloy iron consisting of B, C, Si, Al, and Fe at a specific ratio into an Al block. CONSTITUTION:Boron alloy iron powder which consists of 19-23% B, <=0.1% C, <=2.0% Si, <=12% Al, and Fe as a remaining component and has an about 5- 30mm. grain size is mixed nearly uniformly at a 0.2-0.3 blending ratio into an Al block 2 formed in an adequate shape, and the block 2 is fitted to the plunger 4 of an adding device 3. This is dipped in molten steel charged in a foundary ladle 5 and, while moved up and down and left and right, is held for about 20- 40sec before being lifted. Consequently, the yield of added boron is improved and variation in the added amount of boron is decreased, obtaining stably the adequate amount of boron effective to improve quenching characteristics.
