Abstract

PURPOSE:To both prevent local overheat in a quality improver and perform stable reaction of quality improvement, by utilizing thermal energy of exhaust, improving quality of alcohol fuel through the quality improver and providing a water injection device in the upstream of said quality improver. CONSTITUTION:A quality improver 21 is provided in an exhaust gas passage 20, and an oxidizing catalyzer 22, jointly used for a heat accumulator, is arranged in the upstream of said quality improver 21, further a water injection device 23 is provided in the upstream of said oxidizing catalyzer 22. When an engine is in a range of high speed and high load operation, exhaust temperature rises to at least about 650 deg.C to cause the quality improver 21 in an overheated condition, at this time of high temperature, a quantity of exhaust flowing in a bypass valve 30 is increased to suppress an increase of heat quantity fed to the quality improver 21, simultaneously a water pump 26 is operated to inject water in a water tank 25 into the exhaust gas passage 20 in the upstream of the oxidizing catalyzer 22 through a water injection valve 24. In this way, the exhaust contacted to the oxidizing catalyzer 22 is cooled as well as possible, and overheat of the oxidizing catalyzer 22 and the quality improver 21 can be prevented.
