Abstract

PURPOSE: A fine powder of previously crystallized meta-phosphate glass is sprayed on the surface of formed meta-phosphate salt glass to effect the growth of the crystal from the crystal unclei of the fine powder, thus making it possible to produce meta-phosphate crystallized glass oriented in the one direction in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of calcium carbonate and orthophosphoric acid is placed in a platinum crucible and heated at 1,200W1,300°C for 1W24hours. The raw materials are melted and glassified homogeneously, then cooled to form a plate or rod. A fine powder of previously crystallized meta-phosphate salt glass is sprayed on the surface, especially on the end surface of the formed glass. Then, the formed glass is heated again at a temperature lower than the softening point but higher the transition one in an atmosphere with a temperature gradient. Crystals grow from the crystal nuclei of the fine powder in hemi- sphere form toward inside to give the objective meta-phosphate salt glass crystallized in one direction in a relatively shorter hours.
