Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase high rate discharge performance and utillization by mixing a specified amount of fine zinc powder having a particle size less than a specified value with coarse zinc powdr having a specified particle size in a gelled zinc negative electrode. CONSTITUTION:A positive black mix 2 comprising manganese dioxide or the like, a separator-impregnated layer 6, and a gelled zinc negative electrode 1 are accommodated in a positive case 3. The positive case 3 is sealed with a nevative sealing plate 4 with an insulating sealing gasket 5 interposed to form an alkaline battery. The gelled zinc negative electrode 1 is manufactured in such a way that a large part of coarse zinc powder having a particle size of 75-500mu and a small part of fine zinc powder having a particle size of less than 25mu are mixed and dispersed in a gelled electrolyte, and the mixing amount of the fine zinc powder is selected to be 5-30wt% of the total zinc powder. Preferablly, unamalgamated fine zinc powder is mixed in a gelled electrolyte containing amalgamated coarse zinc powder to amalgamate the fine zinc powder by mercury contained in the coarse zinc powder.
