PURPOSE:To prevent a dictionary file from having redundancy by reducing the frequency of access by using the same dictionary file without reference to whether an input character sequence is a character set containing ''kana'' (Japanese syllabary) small letters or not. CONSTITUTION:In a dictionary file 1, a character sequence containing only ''kana'' small letters as indexes, one-byte small letter flags showing the positions of small letters in the character sequence, and ''kanji'' (Chinese character) codes as data to be retrieved by those indexes are stored. When the character sequence from an input part 2 is a character set containing ''kana'' small letters, a preprocessing part 4 converts the character sequence into a character sequence of only ''kana'' characters similar to the indexes and small-letter flags, and index comparison part 5 compares the character sequence with that in the file 1, and a small- letter flag comparison part 6 compares the small-letter flags with those in the file 1. Only when the comparison parts 5 and 6 generate coincidence outputs at the same time, data is outputted from the file 1 by an output part 7.
