Abstract
PURPOSE: Root vegetables are separated into starch and starch waste, then the starch waste is used in methane fermentation and the resultant methane gas is used as a part of the heat source for the ethanol fermentation of the sugar solution resultant from the saccharification of the above starch to increase the heat economy without environmental pollution.
CONSTITUTION: Root vegetables such as potatoes or sweet potatoes, are ground and separated into starch and starch waste. An appropriate amount of water is added to the starch, steamed and saccharified with a saccharifying enzyme, then a yeast is added to effect ethanol fermentation. After fermentation, disillation is effected to separate ethanol. In the meantime, the starch waste is sent together with the distillation waste formed on the ethanol distillation to the methane fermentation tank where the fermentation is conducted. The formed methane gas is sent to the boiler and used as a part of the heat source. The steam generated in the boiler is used in steaming of the starch and in distillation.
