Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable effective detection of idling or sliding wheels of a vehicle even if all wheels idle or slide by emitting a radio wave or a laser light toward the ground and obtaining a reference speed signal of idling or sliding wheels by utilizing the Doppler effect of the reflected wave or light. CONSTITUTION:An antenna 21 provided on a vehicle body 1 emits a vibration wave at the prescribed angle theta toward the rails or the ground and receives the vibration wave reflected on the ground and returned again to the antenna 21. A controller 22 obtains a reference speed signal from he oscillation frequency of the vibration wave and the Doppler frequency. Then the speed signals of the respective wheels obtained from speed detectors 10, 13 are respectively compared with the reference speed signal, thereby detecting the respective idling or sliding wheels according to whether the difference exceeds the prescribed value or not.
