Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the detecting accuracy of a vehicle on a road, by receiving a circularly polarized wave in the same rotating direction as that of emitted wave among the reflected wave from the vehicle with a receiving antenna, and detecting the vehicle based on the received signal level. CONSTITUTION:An antenna 5, which emits a circularly polarized wave, is provided at a specified position in a road traffic network. The circularly polarized wave is continuously emitted to a road surface 2 from the antenna 5. When a vehicle 1 enters in a region, where the wave is emitted, an antenna 5' for receiving the circularly polarized wave receives the circularly polarized wave in the same rotating direction as that of the reflected wave among the reflected waves from the vehicle 1. The detected signal is transmitted to a control station. The traffic density is computed in the control station based on the number of vehicles, and the traffic can be controlled. Vehicle detection errors due to a natural environment element such as wind are prevented. Therefore, there exists no vehicle detection error at the time of traffic jam as observed in a doppler radar system. Thus, the vehicle can be detected accurately.
